FORT LARNED NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE - 1867 era North Officer's Quarters HS9 - Ft. Larned, KS

Stabilization and restoration of the officer's quarters building located at the Fort Larned National Historic Site in Larned, Kansas. This is a unique structure in that it is constructed of sandstone which has been vandalized over a period of about 100 years. The vandalism is carved into the exterior sandstone and contains markings from the original soldiers stationed at the Fort in the 1860s. Due to the extremely "soft" sandstone and its rapid deterioration from weathering, a critical portion of our scope of work was to consolidate the exterior sandstone to preserve the carvings in their current state. We also excavated the perimeter of the structure exposing the sandstone spread footings which required 100% repointing and foundation waterproofing.

Restoration of exterior and interior historic masonry. This two-story limestone structure constructed in 1909 for the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department for the storage of parks maintenance equipment and the horses they used to pull their implements. The limestone units had deteriorated due to ta repointing of the mortar joints with a hard and less vapor permeable portland cement mortar. This mortar caused the limestone to be the weak link in the wall system causing severe spalling on the face. Also adding to the deterioration of the exterior walls was extensive vegetation including vines covering the elevations.
